| Descrizione sintetica in inglese | Sustainable development and a healthy economy crucially depend on a functioning judiciary. Though the assertion might appear somewhat obvious, this is substantially a novel insight at least in the economic literature. Surprisingly there are so far few theoretical and empirical works attempting to enter the “black box” of courts and understanding in which way efficiency could be fostered. While the enouncement of this issue seems quite simple, it is rather difficult to grasp a clear picture and, accordingly, to identify a proper way out to this problem. The pressure for a similar clarification further derives from the fact that some symptoms of courts’ poor performances, like endless times to disposition and huge backlogs, are a common trait of both developing and rich countries. Accordingly, large international organizations (for example, the World Bank or the European Community) and many governments have started to promote efficiency-oriented judicial reforms. |
