| Descrizione sintetica in italiano | The Regional Secretariat of MiBACT (Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism) will provide a financial collaboration for the study of a first sample of about 100 historical buildings directly or indirectly attributable to the patronage of the Este familiy and located in the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The analysis will require a deep investigation into multiple historical sources from many Italian libraries and archives. A systematic survey will give a precise knowledge of the physical reality of the buildings. The final aim is to produce an accurate catalog of the architectural heritage of the two provinces, which will increase the knowledge about some of the most important monumental buildings in northern Italy. It will be also functional to the great MiBACT restoration campaign of the buildings damaged by the 2012 earthquake in Emilia Romagna. |
| Descrizione sintetica in inglese | The Estense duchy was one of the most refined in Italy in terms of artistic, architectural, theatrical and musical culture. So far the studies have been focused on the city of Ferrara, without an adequate relevance to Modena and Reggio, that were the fulcrum of the duchy in the modern age. The research aims to study the architectural heritage of these two provinces, analyzing the artistic relationships with the capital Ferrara (but also with other Italian courts) during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and investigating cultural strategies, episodes of territorial and urban planning, and the new architectural complexes achieved after the transfer of the court to Modena (1598). Specific objects of the investigation will be residential buildings, ecclesiastical buildings sponsored by the Este, palaces and villas of the courtiers, places for agricultural production, military structures. |
