Descrizione sintetica in italiano | Contextual modulation refers to prominent changes in the processing of information in brain and perception caused by interactions across space and time. The aim of this project is to understand the nature and mechanisms of temporal contextual modulation in somatosensory system at cellular, circuit and cognitive levels. We use a comparative approach in rats and humans. In both species, we employ a novel two-alternative choice vibration-induced tactile motion discrimination task, in which the degree of phase shift between vibrations at two touch points determines the strength of perceived motion. To identify the underlying computations and neuronal mechanisms, in rats, we apply electrophysiology and optogenetics. In humans, we combine psychophysics with EEG. The data will be analysed using methods in signal detection, information and graph theories to develop computational models of how sensory and contextual information interact to regulate choice. |
