Descrizione sintetica in italiano | Isoprenylresorcinols are a large class of natural products, occurring in various higher and lower plants as well as in marine organisms and in bacteria. The medicinal potential of these compounds is exemplified by phytocannabinoids, and their widespread occurrence by the generality of their biogenetic origin, that merges two major secondary metabolites pathways, namely, the one of polyketides and the one of isoprenoids. One unexplained issue on these compounds centres on their optical purity. Thus, related compounds produced by different organisms differ for their chirality status, that can varies from racemic to homochiral through various grades of scalemic states. Additionally, within the same producer, similar cyclization pathways can lead to compounds with different degree of optical purity, as exemplified by menthyl-type phytocannabinoids. Since chirality has a dramatic effect on bioactivity, the clarification of these issues is critical |
