Descrizione sintetica in italiano | The supramolecular approach will be at the base of the design of the sensing molecules since, if properly carried out, is expected to allow, if not a selective recognition of each specific analyte, at least of its belonging to a class of EPs. A second step we would like to pursue in this project is the combination of the recognition unit with a suitable nanostructure. In recent years, this strategy has provided the development of systems presenting several advantages [3] such as: • an amplification of the output signal thanks to collective processes • an increase of the affinity, thanks to a change in local environment and to the increase of local concentration of the receptors • an increase of the solubility of the receptors, whose dispersion is assured by the nanostructure. The signal transduction mechanism is also of fundamental importance. When the transduction is achieved by an optical signal, highly sensitive, versatile, user friendly and cheap devices can be obtained. |
Descrizione sintetica in inglese | The project is focused on the development of sensors devoted to the efficient analysis of Emerging Pollutants (EPs). Typically this class of contaminants includes pharmaceuticals, personal care components, pesticides, industrial and household products, and surfactants: dispersed in water they can lead to chronic toxicity, endocrine disorders and the development of drug resistance. They are not fully regulated and routinely monitored and, in case, they are determined by off-site analysis. Only the development of sensors can satisfy the requirement of EPs monitoring, to prompt their effective regulation within the control of water pollution - a point that standard analytical techniques cannot address. The SUNSET project will develop new supramolecular species able to recognize molecular targets belonging to the class of EPs, and then will combine them with suitable nanomaterials (silica nanoparticles) for an efficient optical transduction (luminescence ) with high signal amplification. |
