| Descrizione sintetica in inglese | The current round of negotiations for the enlargement of the EU, involving six Western Balkans countries, are taking considerably more time than the previous one. Albania applied for EU membership in 2014, and the alignment process is still ongoing. The negotiation process focuses on the implementation of relevant EU legislation, the so-called acquis. This path was at times in stark contrast with empirical evidence and the actual capabilities of these countries in embarking in challenging reform processes. This is even more the case where political, economic and social actors have yet to acquire the right mindset to implement change. This research project is highly interdisciplinary and involves law and political science. It aims at exploring the steps undertaken by Balkan countries to improve their respect for the rule of law and fundamental rights, with a specific focus on Albania . |
