| Descrizione sintetica in italiano | La senescenza cellulare è un stabile arresto del ciclo cellulare innescabile in risposta a vari stress, incluse le infezioni virali. Attraverso l’arresto del ciclo cellulare, la senescenza limita la replicazione di cellule vecchie, danneggiate e la replicazione dei virus. Inoltre, le cellule senescenti producono e secernono una complessa combinazione di fattori, noti come fenotipo secretorio associato alla senescenza (SASP), che media la maggior parte degli effetti immunomodulatori. Il progetto ha lo scopo di studiare la patogenesi delle infezioni opportunistiche e di quelle congenite relative al Cytomegalovirus umano (HCMV) strettamente associate alla senescenza indotta da virus (VIS). In particolare, sfruttando i modelli di infezione cerebrale di HCMV, si mira ad ottenere maggiori informazioni su come le cellule infette sono in grado di influenzare quelle non infette e di come queste cellule contribuiscono alle progressioni delle malattie organo-specifiche. |
| Descrizione sintetica in inglese | Cellular senescence is a highly stable cell cycle arrest that is elicited in response to different stresses, including viral infections. By imposing a growth arrest, senescence limits the replication of old or damaged cells and viral spread. In addition, senescent cells produce and secrete a complex combination of factors, collectively referred to as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), that mediate most of their immune-modulatory effects. The project aims to study the pathogenesis of opportunistic infections in frail patients and of congenital infections by studying the human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV), which is strictly associated with virus-induced senescence (VIS). Specifically, taking advantage of the HCMV brain infection models, this project aims at gaining more insights into how infected cells are able to activate and influence bystander non-infected cells and how these cells contribute to organ-specific disease. |
