Autophagy in the cancer stroma has recently emerged as a mechanism to support the growth and survival of established tumors.normal function and during pathological states such as the formation and progression of Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). Over a century of research has supported a relationship between Thyroid Hormones (THs) and the pathophysiology of various cancer types, and research from my lab has pioneered the concept that the intracellular activation of THs by the activating enzyme type 2 deiodinase (D2) fosters cancer progression and metastatic conversion. More recently, we observed that a surge in D2 and in TH levels occurs in the tumor stroma of different cancer types and induces autophagy of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). |
