| Descrizione sintetica in inglese | Aside its well-know effects on bone metabolism, vitamin D has several effects on the immune system, which have been extensively studied in vitro. Much less is known about the in vivo effects of vitamin D supplementation. Patients with systemic autoimmune diseases are largely affected by low levels of vitamin D, particularly those with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. These patients are indeed a good model for studying the effects of vitamin D supplementation (at different regimens) on the T cells subpopulations (particularly T regulatory cells) and on the gene expression by peripheral monocytes. Such data will be also matched with preclinical cardiovascular damage, as investigated in a parallel project on the same patients. Therefore the relationship between inflammation, immunological profile, vitamin D status and early endothelial damage will be investigated. |
