| Descrizione sintetica in italiano | Work plan The work plan of this project will focus first on the study of the ecology of Med corals this will allow the selection of the more suitable species. Then, methodologies will be developed for the skeletons's cleaning and for the extraction of the OM. After the obtainment of the OMs ,these will be first characterized in terms of solubility in different solvents and after it will start the process of separation of the various components. This will take place both via biochemical means (specific enzymes) that chemically (using specific reagents). The separation of components of different molecular weight will be carried out through chromatographic techniques . As last activity the various components of the organic matrix will be used to check their influence on the precipitation of calcium carbonate in different media of increasing complexity, a solution containing only calcium ions, containing calcium and magnesium ions and artificial seawater. |
| Descrizione sintetica in inglese | Research project The project " Characterization of the organic matrix macromolecules in corals from the Mediterranean sea " is part of the project of the ERC EU FP7 [ 249 930 - CoralWarm ] . The research will focus on the characterization of organic matrices (OMs) from Mediterranean corals. The project will investigate the characteristics of the OM by means of the separation of its components, both in terms of chemical molecules, proteins, polysaccharides and lipids, and according to their molecular weight, trying to highlight the role of low molecular weight components. The characterization will focus in the study of the biochemical characteristics of the components of the OM and especially in the study of their ability to affect the precipitation of calcium carbonate. In this project several experimental techniques will be used. The obtained results will ce correlated with the influence of environmental stress (pH and temperature) on coral calcification. |
