| Descrizione sintetica in italiano | This project investigates the transnational entanglements between Catholicism, Christian democratic thought, and African anticolonial liberation movements in the mid-twentieth century, with a specific focus on Algeria, Tunisia, Angola and Mozambique. While no Christian democratic parties emerged in Africa, Catholic ideas (such as human dignity, subsidiarity, and personalism) deeply influenced anti-colonial intellectual and political life. The project explores how African Catholic actors engaged with European and Latin American counterparts, contributing to global shifts in Catholic social teaching, particularly during Vatican II. Through archival research and analysis of theological and political texts, it rethinks Christian democracy as a global ideology shaped through dynamic South-South and South-North exchanges and entanglements during decolonization. |
